Most of the politicians are excrescences to the government. 
Tom Joad tried to reach home by hitchhiking. 
The modern relations are also ersatz now. 
He has turned out to be a scapegrace.

James Thomson in "The Castle of Indolence" portrays a setting where the dwellers confront moral enervation due to their indulgence in luxury.   The woman is of tawny complexion.  Looking at Alec's murdered body, the landlady had goose flesh.  We bristle at the prospect of another interview.  She was wearing a beige skirt.
