Against the grain

We should read a text against the grain to break its trite perspectives. 
Her nolle prosequi to get married to me as soon as possible is zany. 
Her snide barbs are sometimes very agonizing. 
She adds tartness ad lib to her comments to hurt me. 
I should have shirked that randy trap she laid for me two days ago.

James Thomson in "The Castle of Indolence" portrays a setting where the dwellers confront moral enervation due to their indulgence in luxury.   The woman is of tawny complexion.  Looking at Alec's murdered body, the landlady had goose flesh.  We bristle at the prospect of another interview.  She was wearing a beige skirt.
